lots and lots of stuff in the works.
on april 24, unrecognizable now (along with delaney kelly) will be playing music for a performance piece by dancer/choreographer noelle stiles at TADA! it will be a kind of preview performance of what we have planned for T:BA (time-based art festival) this fall.
TADA! is a live auction/fundraiser event for the portland institute for contemporary art.
we have been rehearsing with delaney for the last few weeks and are very happy with the direction we are going. once we are finished with this upcoming performance we hope to record a version of what we have been doing for a new dublab.com compilation.
there are also a lot more projects in the works. it feels good to be busy.

for the first time in a long, long while matt and i got together with ted and brian for sunday morning music making. it was a very productive session. i recorded a bit of it with my field recorder. here are a few little sections cross faded together (including the beginning which was a voice memo recorded on my phone as i returned to the studio from a bathroom break. i just love the sound of music echoing down the hallway).
the players + the played…
ted – cello / laptop
brian – microphones / laptop ( processing lines sent out from everyone)
matt – electric guitar / laptop / electroncs
marc – acoustic guitar / laptop / electronics / bass guitar

just a brief room mic excerpt from the most recent unrecnow session. we have a show in march and are trying to flush out ideas for a new piece. we’ve been moving around between a few different ideas, we’ll see what happens. we also had to take some photos of ourselves for the website of a documentary that we are scoring. i’m really looking forward to getting more of the footage so that we can begin the scoring in ernest.

i realized after getting emails from people who were asking where they could get our releases that since i redid our site as a blog i had never posted the Pehr or iTunes links to our album + ep. so here we go… go check them out.
for the cd of in a cave or a coma you can go to pehrlabel.com and buy it. or go check out iTunes (the ep is only $3.99 so buy them both!)

here is an edit of a few parts from the unrecongizable now/oo-ray session from sunday. matt is playing guitar + xylophone, ted is playing cello + laptop and i am playing baritone guitar, monome and laptop. it was kind of nice to listen back to this after a few days and hear so much nice stuff that i don’t even remember hearing the first time. i guess sometimes you almost get put in a trance when you are creating music like this where it all becomes a blur. i think that i kind of enjoy that.
hope you like it.

i just found this great scrapbook of photos from tonalism on sassas‘ website. there are some photos of the great people from dublab in there and one of unrecognizable now. go check it out.

matt + i had a nice long improv session with brian (gasp) tonight at our music space. here are a few little excerpts of some room mic recordings. between our out of tune ukulele, piano + harp and brian’s non-western instruments (sruti box + mbira) it was a challenge to find a place where all the notes could work well together. i think it sounded pretty good… well, it was fun. that’s all that matters.

here are the last little bit of music and video from our most recent show.
we were using a three camera set-up to make the video. it created a kind of a kaleidoscope effect by showing the same from different angles.

i put together this poster tonight for a show that matt and i are playing in april. we’ve been preparing muisc for the last few weeks and will start putting together some video this weekend. we are going to mess around with multi-camera shooting and compositing. that should keep us pretty busy for the next few weeks.

we have a lot of stuff in the works right now but this blog keeps coming back to our summer california trip.
our live set we did for tonalism in last summer is up now on dublab.com. you can listen on their site or download it too if you wish. link
hey friends.
so dublab.com is holding their pledge drive this week they are a great internet radio station based in LA that does great things to support music and art. they have always been very kind to us, always giving us airplay and inviting us down there to do live sessions and play shows… so i put it out there to them that anyone who donates $50 or more today will get a free copy of our ‘for sleeping it off’ ep that we made just for the Tonalism night they invited us to play last July.
for more info you can go to to dublab and check out the proton drive page.
thanks!
here are some stills and the opening and closing pieces of music that we’ve done for the soundtrack we were commissioned to do. we are pretty happy with is so far. we will keep you up to date with how the project turns out.

we’ve been hard at work on a number of short pieces recently commissioned for a film. we are excited to share the music with everyone. the score is a bit of a departure for us but still very sounds very much like unrecognizable now. we are working on a quick turn around because the complete film will be submitted to sundance next week. after that we will work on editing the pieces together and post some samples here. wish us luck.
we contributed a couple of loops to an audio/visual project Dublab + Creative Commons put together called into infinity, that are now up on the project’s website.
here’s some information on the project…
INTO INFINITY: an exploration of on and
on and on and on …
Explore the wide possibilities of forever! INTO INFINITY is an art and music exhibition presented by DUBLAB and Creative Commons. It is built on audio loops and circular canvases that are available online to the public for sharing, remixing, and resubmission. Stay tuned for live exhibition dates and website developments.
“EYE”
We distributed white 12-inch paper circles to our community of inspired artists to fill with vibrant visions. These infinite loops are designed to shine and blow minds.
“EAR”
We asked our music-minded friends to create 8-second audio loops filled with any sound texture they desired. These infinite loops are designed to expand in open ears.
All of the works that comprise INTO INFINITY are available to the public under a Creative Commons Attribution-Noncommercial copyright license. This means that you are free to share them and remix them for any noncommercial purpose you wish. We can’t wait to see what you do with these infinite loops!
click here to go directly to our contributions. you’ll have to hit refresh on your browser window to hear them all (they pop up randomly).
our new ep is now available on iTunes for the low low price of $3.99. please take a look/listen.
so we have been back from our quick trip down to la for about a week now. The whole thing seems a distant memory now. I knew that I should have written about it as soon as we got home. I will publish a full account with photos soon.
in commemoration of our trip to LA to play at TONALISM we are releasing a new EP called for sleeping it off. these three songs will be released in very limited numbers on CDr and USB drive. more information to come.

we have two great shows coming up in southern california this month.
the first will be at pehrspace in echo park on july 17th. we will be playing with signal hill and our friends languis which now includes adam hervey (timonium/pehr labelboss).
along with white rainbow we will be proudly representing portland at this year’s TONALISM event at the santa monica pier on July 19th. we play at around 9pm but the event lasts all night long. there will be lots of beautiful ambient music and live visuals. here is some information on that event.
Inspired by La Monte Young’s Dream House as well as the work of musicians and composers such as Terry Riley, Yoko Ono and John Cage, Tonalism combines harmonious textures with visual elements to create an atmosphere where the audience is encouraged to bring pillows, cushions and sleeping bags to lay down, listen and watch for an extended period of time. DJs, live musicians and VJs play and perform throughout the night; starting at sunset and ending at sunrise. Complimentary tea and water are provided to all who attend.
